Fly-out to Frederick (FDK) March 5th, 2016

by Juergen Nies

Originally we had planned to fly to Williamsburg today, but then we found out there was an event going on at Lancaster, PA (LNS) so we switched destinations. At the end the weather wasn't quite good enough going there so we made a last minute call and decided to fly to Frederick, MD for lunch instead.

Bob Metcalfe, Dan Christian, Jim Lum and I met at about 10:00 AM at my hangar at OKV. Bob flew up in his Luscombe from Front Royal to meet us. Jim decided to fly neither his Navajo nor his Citabria but rather catch a ride in Bob's Luscombe, so we ended up with three airplanes (Bob's Luscombe, Dan's Sprint/Aviat F-22 and my Pacer) for the short trip to FDK. Bob and Jim took off first with me shortly after them. I must have past them somewhere between OKV and FDK, but never saw them. Dan took off some time after us since he had by far the fastest plane today.

Soon we all called in with the tower to get into the landing sequence. FDK was quite busy today, but the controllers always do a good job to get everyone lined up and on and off the ground.

We enjoyed some good food and a lot of hangar flying kind of talking, but soon it was time to head back home. I took off first with Bob and Jim in the Luscombe second and Dan behind us. We managed to join up between Harpers Ferry and Winchester to fly into Winchester in a three ship formation. For all of you who know a little about formation flying, it is not easy to do with three so dissimilar airplanes. While Bob was going almost full throttle, I had to throttle back somewhat, but Dan was thinking about putting his flaps and the gear down to stay with us. Nevertheless it must have looked pretty nice and too bad we didn't have another camera ship with us to take a picture of us.

After we all got back to Winchester we went over to Jim's hangar to look at the new Garmin G600 panel he had installed in his Navajo. Very nice set up and definitely a big improvement over the old set up. He is ready to fly down to Sun & Fun and has seats available if anyone needs a ride to get down there.
